Nonsurgical root canal therapy is a treatment used to save teeth that have been damaged by decay or infection. The procedure involves removing the damaged or infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the tooth, and then sealing it.

Root canal therapy is often successful in saving teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It can also help to prevent further spread of infection and damage to nearby teeth.

Root canal therapy is usually performed by a dentist or an endodontist (a specialist in treating problems with the dental pulp). The procedure can be done in one or more visits, depending on the severity of the damage or infection.

During root canal therapy, our dentist will first numb your tooth and surrounding tissues with local anesthesia. Next, a rubber dam (a small sheet of rubber) will be placed around your tooth to keep it clean and dry during the procedure.

We will then drill until we access the dental pulp to remove the damaged or infected tissue and clean the area. After the area has been cleaned, our dentist will fill the tooth with a material called gutta-percha and seal it. Gutta-percha is a rubbery material that helps to protect the tooth from reinfection.

Nonsurgical root canal therapy can often be done in one or two visits. In some cases, additional treatment may be needed to save the tooth. For example, if the tooth is severely damaged or infected, our dentist may place a dental crown over the tooth to protect it.

If you have a tooth that is painful or sensitive, contact our office as soon as possible. We will be able to determine whether nonsurgical root canal therapy is necessary.
